A New Live-Action Bugs Bunny Movie in the Works

The most famous rabbit in the world, Bugs Bunny, will return in a new solo movie.

Bugs Bunny is ready for his triumphant return to the big screen. After being part of Space Jam: A New Legacy in 2021 witht the rest of the Looney Tunes, the famous rabbit in the world will have a new adventure in theaters, this time solo.

Through his official website, the writer and director Robert Rugan revealed that he was hired to write the script for a hybrid live-action and animation film focused solely on Bugs Bunny for Warner Bros. Discovery. Rugan did not provide further details, although he did announce that there will be more information soon.

Created in 1930 under the Leon Schlesinger Productions label, which would later become Warner Bros. Cartoons, Bugs Bunny has become quite a brand within the world of animation and far beyond. Originally played by actor and radio personality Mel Blanc, the character has come a long way in pop culture establishing himself as a more than prominent face for Warner, especially within all the Looney Tunes productions.

Over the years, Bugs has starred in a long list of shorts, television episodes, sketches, movies, specials and all kinds of production for film and television, as well as being an essential face within the franchise to create merchandising. He even has his own comic books. He is the animated character with the most appearances in history, and the ninth personality in the entire industry with the most appearances.

This year, Warner Bros. Discovery will also be releasing a movie focused on two other famous Looney Tunes characters in Coyote vs. Acme, which will of course feature the returns of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner.

Warner Bros. Discovery Strategy for Its Biggest Franchises

Bugs Bunny’s solo movie is not a surprise considering the news that the company led by David Zaslav has revealed in recent months. As the CEO has made clear on several occasions, for the future of the studio they seek to exploit their great franchises and their classic characters to maintain their audience and get new fans.

This is how the new DCU, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, will have two of the most popular characters from the comic book company for its first phase: Batman and Superman. They will surely be joined by Wonder Woman, whom Gunn expressed his intentions to bring to the animated format, and Supergirl, another of the brand’s great heroines.

Harry Potter will also seek to shine again, and not with new stories as it did with Fantastic Beasts, but with a series adaptation of the original saga by J.K. Rowling, introducing new versions of Harry, Ron and Hermione to the audience.

Zaslav also announced a while ago that they wanted to make new Lord of the Rings movies, though no Tolkien-related projects beyond Prime Video’s The Rings of Power have been confirmed so far.

Game of Thrones is another great example of the company’s intentions, with not only a second season for House of the Dragon, but another spinoff now in the works that will adapt George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, following a young Aegon Targaryan.
