A Marvel Director Expresses Interest in Directing a Standalone Lobo Film, While Jason Momoa’s New Photo Hints at Possible DCU Casting

2025 might mark a major comeback for DC films, as the DC Universe kicks off its new cinematic chapter this summer with Superman: Legacy. There’s a lot riding on its success—potentially Warner’s last shot at building a cohesive universe to rival the MCU. The previous franchise is effectively done, with most of its cast and crew gone. However, Jason Momoa remains onboard, though he’s shifting from Aquaman to Lobo.

To tease fans, Momoa recently posted a video on Instagram, along with a photo featuring actress Adria Arjona, sparking speculation about her potential role in the DCU. Meanwhile, David Leitch, the director of Deadpool 2, chimed in via the comments, throwing his hat in the ring for a Lobo film.

The video and accompanying photo, both linked below, have fans buzzing. In the video, Momoa stands by a roaring campfire (aptly LOBO-gó in Hungarian), with Motörhead’s music playing in the background, waving the script for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Written by Ana Nogueira (The Vampire Diaries), the film is based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic and is set to be directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) this year. A cheeky note on the script reads: “For Lobo’s eyes only,” teasing the connection between the antihero and the story. And of course, there’s the cigar—a signature accessory reminiscent of Lemmy, the Motörhead frontman and inspiration for Lobo’s character.

But it’s the appearance of Adria Arjona in the attached photo that has raised eyebrows. The Puerto Rican actress is known for her roles in True Detective, Six Underground, Morbius, Andor, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, and Emergency Call. However, there’s been no previous buzz linking her to James Gunn’s DCU projects. Could she be joining the cast of Supergirl? Or might she have a role in the Lobo film Leitch hinted at? It’s all speculation for now.

Fans are also abuzz over the possibility that Arjona could portray Wonder Woman in the DCU, a role many believe she would excel in. Of course, it’s also possible that Momoa simply shared the photo because the two are rumored to be in a relationship following his split from Lisa Bonet.

The most intriguing development, however, is David Leitch’s comment on Momoa’s post:
“A standalone Lobo film? :) Count me in, Jason Momoa! We were born to tell this story. This character was made for you!”

The comment has garnered significant attention and likes, showing that there’s real demand for a Lobo movie. With James Gunn’s emphasis on lesser-known characters and Lobo’s own comic series, the idea seems plausible. Leitch’s comment even hints that he might already be in talks for such a project.

Filming for Supergirl is slated to begin this January, so we can expect set photos of Momoa in costume to surface soon. There’s even a chance that James Gunn might share an official photo, as he did with Superman: Legacy. The film is scheduled for a June 2026 release.
