Amazon and the Russo brothers' production company, AGBO (known for Avengers: Endgame), are teaming up to create a film inspired by a real FBI operation. The story revolves around two undercover agents who infiltrate major global crime syndicates and organize a fake wedding to stage a dramatic sting operation against the gangsters. According to Deadline, the agents will be portrayed by Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables) and Dave Bautista (Drax from the MCU).
The screenplay is being penned by Jonathan Tropper, the creator behind series like Banshee and Warrior. Tropper also wrote the scripts for Kodachrome (starring Ed Harris, Elizabeth Olsen, and Jason Sudeikis) and The Adam Project (a time-travel comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Shawn Levy). In this FBI-inspired tale, Tropper emphasizes humor, focusing on the clashing styles of Hathaway and Bautista’s spy characters. Initially, the two can’t stand each other but must pretend to be romantically involved for the operation to succeed.
Tropper is currently one of the most sought-after writers in Hollywood. He’s behind Anya Taylor-Joy’s new series Lucky and is reportedly working on a Star Wars film with Shawn Levy after Levy’s success with Deadpool & Wolverine. Tropper also wrote the script for another Bautista comedy in development at Amazon, titled The Wrecking Crew. That film stars Bautista alongside Jason Momoa and was originally Bautista’s idea—he casually pitched the buddy-cop movie to Momoa a few years ago.
Hathaway and Bautista will also serve as producers on the untitled spy comedy, alongside Joe and Anthony Russo. The Russo brothers are rebounding from their ambitious but underwhelming Amazon series Citadel, and they’re set to return to Marvel soon to direct the next two Avengers films.
