Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff became an iconic character in the first three phases of the MCU, rivaling the likes of Captain America or Black Widow. Afterward, she even received her own series that deepened her character. To the disappointment of many fans, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness saw her descend into villainy, culminating in her seemingly bringing a mountain down on herself in a moment of redemption. Speculations about her fate persist—was her death real? Particularly since her son, Billy, is central to Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, and Kevin Feige as well as Olsen have hinted at her return. According to a fan theory, Doctor Doom might play a crucial role in this.
Screen Rant presented an intriguing theory suggesting that Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. (as a variant), could have escaped his timeline and was sent to The Pit by TVA agents. This infamous holding zone, featured in one of the year's most successful films with Deadpool and Wolverine, has housed major figures before, much like various Loki variants. Screen Rant speculates Doom may have struck a deal with the TVA, potentially becoming one of the more powerful survivors in The Pit. Fate might connect Doom to Wanda—better known as the Scarlet Witch.
By the end of Doctor Strange 2, Wanda seemingly redeemed herself after seeing her children from an alternate universe and realizing they feared her. In response, she destroyed Mount Wundagore, obliterating the Darkhold across all realities. While Agatha: Darkhold Diaries toys with the idea of Wanda's death, this theory posits she instead transported herself into The Pit during her spell. This would allow for her prime-MCU version—not an alternate variant—to return in future films.
One intriguing link supports this theory. In the hideout of the rebels from the Deadpool/Wolverine film, there is a striking Scarlet Witch mural or sculpture, similar to one seen in Doctor Strange 2. While it was presumably destroyed along with Mount Wundagore, its presence in The Pit raises suspicions that Wanda herself may be there—possibly crossing paths with Doctor Doom.
Screen Rant connects this to Marvel Comics, where a storyline has Wanda deliberately suppressing her memories and hiding her identity. In the comics, she ends up in Latveria, under Doom’s influence. Her sons, Billy (Wiccan) and Tommy (Speed), track her down, only to discover that Doom manipulated Wanda into becoming his lover and even fiancée. The MCU has laid the groundwork for a similar arc—Agatha: Darkhold Diaries shows Billy and Agatha setting out to find Tommy, and this could naturally lead to the Young Avengers searching for their mother. If the theory holds, their journey might end with Wanda under Doom’s sway, just like in the comics.
Screen Rant even suggests The Pit might be the MCU’s adaptation of Battleworld from the Secret Wars (2015) storyline. Both locations are amalgamations of multiple realities, and as in the comics, Doom could rule over The Pit. Even if this seems far-fetched, the idea that Wanda—stripped of her memories—could be living in The Pit under Doom’s control feels plausible.
We’ll find out soon enough as Marvel concludes its Multiverse Saga by 2027. Reports claim Elizabeth Olsen is slated for key roles not only in Avengers: Doomsday but also in the Secret Wars storyline and the subsequent Mutant Saga. If true, Doom and Wanda's connection, as theorized, could play a pivotal role in the MCU’s future.
What do you think? Could this be the way Wanda returns to the MCU?
