What do Tom Holland and Austin Butler have in common? Both have starred alongside Zendaya—Holland in the Spider-Man trilogy and Butler in Dune: Part Two. More importantly, they’re both talented young actors and rising stars, who are finally coming together for a shared project that fans are eager to see. The film, titled American Speed, is an exciting racing drama with a promising storyline.
According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios is producing American Speed, starring Tom Holland and Austin Butler, with Oppenheimer producer Charles Roven on board as well. The screenplay is being written by Dan S. Wiedenhaupt, known for the prehistoric adventure drama Alpha. As of now, the project has not yet secured a director or set a release date.
American Speed is based on a real story—the lives of Bill, Dale, and Don Whittington. These race car drivers became embroiled in a scandal within the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) in the 1980s, when several drivers were accused of financing their racing careers through drug smuggling, money laundering, or tax evasion. Of the Whittington brothers, only Don is still alive.
Next year is shaping up to be a busy one for Tom Holland, as he’s set to work with Christopher Nolan, appear in Avengers 5, and return to his role as Spider-Man. Austin Butler, meanwhile, will be back in high-speed action in American Speed after The Bikeriders and is also slated to star in Darren Aronofsky’s new film, Caught Stealing.
