On December 30, 2024, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie signed the final papers finalizing their divorce, officially bringing an end to Hollywood’s once-iconic couple’s relationship. The two actors first got together on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2004, sparking controversy at the time as Pitt left Jennifer Aniston for Jolie. After years of dating, they tied the knot in 2014 but separated in 2016. Ironically, their divorce proceedings lasted longer than their marriage itself.
“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and her children left behind all shared properties with Mr. Pitt, and since then, her focus has been on finding peace and healing for her family,” read a statement from Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon. According to Simon, the actress was deeply exhausted by the lengthy process but is relieved to finally put her marriage behind her.
In 2016, the couple made headlines when Jolie accused Pitt of physical abuse. Allegedly, during a private flight, Pitt choked one of their children, struck another in the face, and also grabbed Jolie forcefully. In her filing, Jolie claimed that Pitt had previously exhibited unacceptable behavior. Pitt, in turn, accused Jolie of selling half of their French vineyard without his consent. Accusations flew back and forth, though the case avoided becoming another high-profile media circus akin to Depp vs. Heard.
Despite the turmoil, both actors’ careers remained resilient. Pitt won his first Oscar in 2020 for his role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and is set to return to the big screen in June 2025 with a highly anticipated, big-budget sports film about Formula 1. Jolie, while stepping back from the spotlight in recent years, made her Marvel debut in Eternals and is receiving Oscar buzz for her lead role in Maria, set to hit Hungarian cinemas this Thursday, which could earn her a second Academy Award.
