Sony Pictures has released the official trailer for Resident Evil, a new cinematic reinvention of Capcom’s legendary survival-horror franchise from writer and director Zach Cregger.
Austin Abrams stars as Bryan, a medical courier sent to deliver a mysterious package to a remote hospital near Raccoon City. What initially appears to be another routine journey quickly turns into a desperate fight for survival when he becomes stranded in the snowy mountains during a catastrophic outbreak.
The new trailer follows Bryan as one horrifying night collapses into complete chaos around him. Blood-covered snow, abandoned buildings, infected creatures and increasingly violent encounters suggest that the film will lean heavily into the tense survival-horror atmosphere associated with the original games.
Rather than adapting the story of an established character such as Leon S. Kennedy, Jill Valentine or Claire Redfield, the movie introduces an entirely new protagonist. Cregger has explained that Bryan’s journey takes place on the periphery of the events depicted in Resident Evil 2, allowing the film to explore another corner of Raccoon City’s disastrous outbreak without rewriting the games’ central storylines.
The filmmaker has described the movie as a continuous descent into danger, following one increasingly overwhelmed protagonist from one terrifying situation to the next. The approach appears designed to recreate the experience of playing a Resident Evil game, where every newly opened door can reveal another threat.
Abrams previously worked with Cregger on Weapons. The supporting cast includes Severance star Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser and Johnno Wilson. Zach Cregger co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, whose credits include John Wick: Chapter 4 and Army of the Dead.
This latest version will not continue the Milla Jovovich-led film series or the story of 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Instead, it represents another fresh beginning for the franchise, combining familiar Umbrella Corporation mythology and infected monsters with an original survival story.
With Cregger’s reputation for unsettling horror, an intentionally vulnerable central character and a trailer packed with gore, gunfire and blood-stained landscapes, Resident Evil looks determined to bring genuine fear back to the long-running franchise.
Resident Evil is scheduled to arrive exclusively in cinemas on 18 September 2026.
