Benedict Cumberbatch Shares His Vision for Doctor Strange’s Future in the MCU

The first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) introduced several iconic characters, including Iron Man, Steve Rogers as Captain America, and, of course, Doctor Strange. Benedict Cumberbatch has portrayed the Sorcerer Supreme as a deeply complex hero—a man who started out grounded in the world of science, only to discover that reality holds far more than logic can explain. According to Cumberbatch, exploring the consequences of Strange's cosmic mistakes and the price he pays for them is the key to the character’s future.

During the Red Sea International Film Festival, where The Wonder—a romance starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, produced by Cumberbatch’s SunnyMarch production company—was being showcased, the actor was asked about Doctor Strange’s future in the MCU. "He’s a complex character driven by a need to control everything he can, no matter the cost. What fascinates me is exploring what that ‘cost’ truly is and where that journey might take him. There’s so much room to play with here, and it’s incredibly exciting," Cumberbatch explained.

Cumberbatch has previously confirmed that he will return to the MCU, with a significant role in Avengers: Doomsday—the fifth installment of the Avengers saga—set to begin filming next spring. He hinted at what’s to come, saying, "A big storm is brewing," a clear reference to the Secret Wars. Doctor Strange has much to atone for, as his actions contributed to the incursion of universes, leading to their destruction. At the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he sought the help of Charlize Theron’s Clea to address this catastrophe.

Cumberbatch also praised the MCU’s ability to deliver meaningful films, provided they’re well-made: "When done right, they capture the zeitgeist, resonate with audiences, and contribute to our culture. They’re a lot of fun to be a part of." However, he admitted he had initial reservations about playing Strange, finding the character arrogant and, in some ways, "misogynistic." Over time, he came to appreciate why Strange’s introduction was so crucial—it brought spirituality into the MCU, opening entirely new dimensions for the franchise.

"This was something we hadn’t seen before in the MCU—a whole new territory," Cumberbatch elaborated. "He’s also a novel kind of hero, capable of wielding immense power through sheer will. That’s his true superpower, and his origin story is incredibly rich."
