The future looks glamorous in Ray Gunn. Look a little closer, though, and it’s full of murder, corruption and one very tired detective.
Brad Bird’s first new animated feature since Incredibles 2 stars Sam Rockwell as Raymond Gunn, an old-school private eye working in Metropia — a retro-futuristic city imagined through the eyes of 1939. His latest case brings him into the orbit of Venus Nova, a controversial megastar voiced by Scarlett Johansson, and quickly spirals into aliens, murder and the much darker side of the city.
Bird describes the film as The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers, with Tom Waits also voicing Ray’s one-eyed alien partner. Ray Gunn opens in select theaters and limited 70mm on December 4 before streaming on Netflix December 18, 2026.
