Conan O'Brien has been named as the host for the 97th Academy Awards, set to take place on March 2, 2025. Conan began his career as a writer for Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons, before stepping into the spotlight in 1993 as the host of NBC’s Late Night, succeeding David Letterman. At the time, he was dating actress Lisa Kudrow, who a year later landed her breakout role in the sitcom Friends. While their personal paths diverged, Conan and Kudrow remain close friends to this day.
After hosting Late Night for 16 years, Conan briefly helmed NBC’s The Tonight Show in 2009. However, this stint ended in controversy when Jay Leno reclaimed the show in what became known as the "Second Late Night War," leading to Conan's departure. He later launched his own talk show on TBS, but as the late-night format began to wane, he transitioned into podcasting.
As Deadline reports, Conan’s humor is notably less political than that of peers like Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, or Jon Stewart. This reportedly played a key role in his selection as host, as the Academy aims to steer clear of a politically charged ceremony, particularly in the wake of Donald Trump’s re-election.
