Despite Dwayne Johnson enlisting stars like Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, and J.K. Simmons as Santa Claus for his holiday action spectacle, Red One failed to recoup its estimated $250 million budget at the global box office within a month. No worries, though—Amazon backed the film, and while it’s still in theaters, it has already arrived on streaming, where it delivered the strongest opening in Prime Video history: 50 million global viewers in just four days. According to Amazon, this beats the previous record-holder, the Road House reboot, which also reportedly opened to 50 million viewers earlier this spring.
"From the way audiences have responded to Red One in theaters and on Prime Video, it’s clear this will be a holiday favorite for years to come," said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. Kevin Wilson, head of theatrical distribution, also noted that box office results are less concerning for Amazon since theatrical runs essentially serve as part of the streaming premiere’s marketing campaign.
