Netflix has released the official trailer for Don’t Say Good Luck, a heartfelt coming-of-age dramedy starring Sunny Sandler as a teenager attempting to balance high school, family and the biggest theatrical opportunity of her life.
Sophie Birenbaum has finally earned her moment in the spotlight after being cast as the lead in her school musical. What should be an exciting period filled with rehearsals, friendships and opening-night nerves soon becomes far more complicated when her mother’s cancer returns, creating considerably more drama at home than Sophie could ever encounter on stage.
The trailer moves between the awkward humour of teenage life and the much heavier emotional reality facing Sophie and her family. As she tries to remain committed to the production, she must also process fear, uncertainty and the possibility of losing someone she loves.
Sunny Sandler leads an impressive ensemble cast that includes Melanie Lynskey, Max Greenfield, Jack Champion, Stephanie Beatriz, Bebe Neuwirth, Steve Buscemi and Jon Lovitz. The film is directed by Julia Hart, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jordan Horowitz and Laura Hankin. Its story was inspired by Hankin’s own experience of landing the lead role in her high school musical at the same time her mother’s cancer returned.
Blending comedy, music and family drama, Don’t Say Good Luck appears set to explore how moments of joy and heartbreak can exist side by side — and how performing on stage can sometimes provide an escape when real life becomes overwhelming.
