Netflix has released the official teaser for East of Eden, a new limited series adapted from John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel. Led by Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames, the series brings one of American literature’s most complicated antiheroes back to the screen in a dark, sweeping family saga.
The teaser immediately places Cathy at the centre of the story. Rather than presenting East of Eden only as a generational drama about the Trask family, Netflix’s version appears to lean strongly into Cathy’s perspective: her fear, her survival instinct, her mystery and the moral darkness surrounding her. It is a smart angle for a modern adaptation, especially with Pugh in a role that demands both emotional precision and danger.
Zoe Kazan writes and executive produces the series, continuing a fascinating family connection to the material: her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation starring James Dean. This new version, however, is not simply revisiting that cinematic legacy. As a seven-episode limited series, East of Eden has more room to explore the novel’s wider emotional and historical landscape.
Christopher Abbott stars as Adam Trask, while Mike Faist plays Charles Trask. The cast also includes Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, Ciarán Hinds, Joseph Zada and Joe Anders, building out a story that spans decades and examines family, choice, inheritance and the darker side of the California dream.
For viewers who love literary adaptations with ambition and emotional weight, East of Eden looks like one of Netflix’s major prestige drama releases of the year. The teaser is restrained, atmospheric and ominous, suggesting a series less interested in rushing through plot and more focused on character, moral tension and the long shadow of family history.
All seven episodes of East of Eden are set to stream globally on Netflix this fall.
