Elizabeth Olsen debuted as Wanda Maximoff in the post-credits scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. After appearing in subsequent Avengers films, her character became a central figure in the MCU, even headlining her own series (WandaVision) alongside Vision and serving as the antagonist in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Recently, Olsen expressed her eagerness to return to the franchise. It was also revealed that she will voice her character in the upcoming animated Marvel Zombies series, set to release next fall. In a recent interview, Olsen discussed why she believes Marvel Studios, despite frequent criticism, is vital to the industry.
The actress explained that while she has never subscribed to the common Hollywood mindset of making "one film for them" (the studios) and "one for me" (more personal projects), her approach shares similarities.
"Marvel has always been this constant I could return to—a sort of… what’s the right word? A safety net in my life, providing the freedom to take on other projects. But it’s not like I approach Marvel films thinking, 'I’ll do this so I can make that.'"
Olsen emphasized that she has never felt pressured to return to the MCU. Instead, she has always perceived it as a choice, drawn to the character-driven stories that filmmakers have pitched to her. Much like her co-star Sebastian Stan, she believes Marvel offers not only stability for actors but also plays a crucial role in sustaining the cinema industry. According to Olsen, Marvel’s success enables the creation of more intimate films like Three Daughters of the Father, shot on 35mm film. While this movie had a limited theatrical release in the U.S., it was primarily distributed on Netflix globally.
When asked about Wanda's future (and fate), Olsen shared her interpretation of the Doctor Strange 2 finale, saying she believes Wanda is dead. However, she remains open to a potential resurrection, confident that skilled writers can find a compelling way to bring her character back.
