One of the year’s biggest surprises has been The Penguin, a Golden Globe-nominated series that exceeded expectations. Not only did it craft a complex gangster story centered on Colin Farrell’s villain from The Batman, but it also elevated Cristin Milioti’s Sofia, the tragic daughter of Carmine Falcone, into a compelling protagonist. The series delved deep into its characters and Gotham’s soul. While the ending wrapped up neatly, fans would love to see these figures return in some form. Luckily, Matt Reeves has good news: discussions about a second season are underway, and the script for The Batman 2 is nearing completion.
Speaking with Variety, Reeves sat down with actress Zoë Kravitz, who directed her own film (Pussy Island) this year. Their conversation touched on the first The Batman film, Catwoman’s character, Kravitz’s directorial debut, and the future of the franchise. Naturally, Kravitz asked Reeves about The Batman 2 and whether he was still working on the script. Reeves confirmed:
"Yeah, we’re wrapping up the script soon. We’re shooting next year."
Kravitz also brought up The Penguin, curious if there would be more series like it since the first season clearly resonated with audiences. Reeves responded:
"Yeah, we’re already in talks with showrunner Lauren LeFranc about doing another season. The Penguin was a special experience. I feel incredibly lucky. These characters don’t belong to me—they belong to the world. It’s just about finding an approach that allows us to express something personal through them."
The big question now is how to continue The Penguin. (Spoilers ahead!) If you’ve seen the show, you know Oz (Farrell) achieved significant success, built political connections, and neutralized Sofia, sending her back to Arkham. In a bizarre twist, he brought his paralyzed mother back home as a sort of living decoration, maintaining their twisted relationship to reinforce his identity, which heavily relies on her admiration. By the end of the season, Oz fully embodies the tuxedoed, top-hatted crime lord fans know from the comics.
Meanwhile, Gotham faces new developments: the Bat-Signal lights up the sky, signaling the need for the Caped Crusader, and something stirs within Arkham. Sofia receives a letter from her nurse and confidant, Dr. Rush. The note? It’s from Selina Kyle—Catwoman herself—hinting at Zoë Kravitz’s potential return to the storyline.
Clearly, there’s plenty of material for a second season of The Penguin. As for The Batman 2, it’s scheduled for release in fall 2026. Stay tuned for updates, including a deeper dive into how The Penguin’s finale could have played out differently and Reeves’ explanation of why Batman doesn’t intervene in the series.
