Two years ago, The Way of Water unveiled the underwater world of Pandora’s oceans. In Avatar 3, coming next December, we’ll meet the fire people who live near Pandora's volcanoes. Although the next preview of James Cameron’s sci-fi franchise is still forthcoming, these five new concept images showcase the breathtaking visuals we can expect from this distant world once again.
The third installment, titled Fire and Ash, introduces a new Na’vi clan that Cameron describes as representing “the worst side of the Na’vi.” The director also noted that the story would echo real-world tensions: “Our world right now is full of anger and rage.” He added that audiences could expect a thrilling adventure with an even greater emotional impact than in the first two films. “There will be new characters, including one you’ll love to hate. There will be new cultures, settings, habitats, and much more of Pandora,” Cameron hinted.
Scheduled to hit theaters in December 2025, Avatar: Fire and Ash will bring back Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, and Giovanni Ribisi in their familiar roles (Weaver returns as Kiri, though we may also see her as Grace in flashbacks). David Thewlis, known as Lupin from the Harry Potter films, will join as a Na’vi named Peylak, while Oona Chaplin, granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin, will portray Varang, the leader of the fire clan.
Despite the 13-year gap between the first two Avatar movies, both exceeded $2 billion globally, with the franchise amassing $5.5 billion in total box office revenue. Following Fire and Ash, Cameron plans two more installments, with Avatar 4 anticipated in 2029 and Avatar 5 in 2031.
