Twenty-six years after Greg Focker desperately tried to enter Jack Byrnes’ circle of trust, the tables have finally turned.
Universal’s Focker-In-Law is bringing Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro back for another chapter of the Meet the Parents franchise, and the new Trailer 2 makes the film’s central joke beautifully clear.
Greg is now the suspicious father.
And Ariana Grande is the potential new member of the family being tested.
Grande stars as Olivia Jones, the girlfriend of Greg and Pam Focker’s son Henry, played by Skyler Gisondo.
Henry brings Olivia home to meet the family with one particularly important piece of information waiting in the background.
He is considering marrying her.
For Greg, that means suddenly discovering exactly what it feels like to become Jack Byrnes.
The new trailer plays heavily with that generational reversal.
Back in Meet the Parents, Greg spent an entire weekend attempting to prove that he was good enough for Jack’s daughter Pam.
Jack interrogated him.
Watched him constantly.
Tested his honesty.
Invaded his privacy.
And, most famously, subjected him to the kind of psychological pressure normally associated with intelligence work rather than meeting your girlfriend’s parents.
Now Greg looks at Olivia and immediately begins asking many of the same questions.
Is she right for Henry?
Can she be trusted?
What exactly does she want?
And why does everyone else seem to like her so quickly?
Unfortunately for Greg, Olivia may be considerably better prepared for the Byrnes family than he ever was.
She is a former FBI hostage negotiator.
That profession alone feels almost suspiciously perfect for someone about to spend significant amounts of time with Jack Byrnes.
Jack, of course, spent his own career in the CIA.
Rather than becoming immediately hostile towards Olivia, he appears impressed by her.
Which creates a wonderful new problem for Greg.
For years, his goal was getting Jack’s approval.
Now the woman dating his son appears capable of receiving it almost immediately.
The new trailer’s lie-detector sequence makes the role reversal explicit.
Olivia finds herself connected to Jack’s familiar machine as he begins questioning her about Henry and the family.
It should be Greg’s opportunity to enjoy watching somebody else suffer through the experience that once made his own life miserable.
For approximately several seconds, it is.
Then Olivia turns the interrogation back towards him.
She questions whether Greg emotionally smothers Henry, casually exposing embarrassing childhood nicknames and pushing him directly into the kind of uncomfortable territory Jack once reserved for Greg.
Suddenly, Greg is effectively being interrogated inside his own family.
And Jack seems delighted.
That dynamic gives Focker-In-Law a smart way to revisit the franchise without simply repeating the first movie.
Greg has spent decades surviving Jack Byrnes.
Now he has unconsciously become him.
He worries about Henry.
He wants to protect him.
He is convinced that his suspicion is completely reasonable.
Exactly the same things Jack would have said about Greg.
Ben Stiller therefore gets to play both sides of the franchise’s most famous conflict.
He is still Greg Focker — awkward, defensive and uniquely capable of making manageable situations catastrophically uncomfortable.
But he is also a father discovering that letting an adult child make his own romantic decisions can be terrifying.
Robert De Niro’s Jack, meanwhile, appears to have reached the stage where observing Greg’s transformation is part of the entertainment.
The irony is almost perfect.
The man who spent years tormenting Greg now gets to watch Greg reproduce many of his behaviours.
And Olivia gives him an unexpected new ally.
Ariana Grande’s casting could easily have functioned as simple star power.
Instead, Trailer 2 suggests the filmmakers have given her a character specifically designed to survive this family.
Olivia is confident.
Professionally trained to remain calm during intense conversations.
Athletic.
Direct.
And apparently extremely difficult to intimidate.
That makes her almost the opposite of the Greg Focker who originally arrived at Jack’s house in 2000.
Where Greg panicked, Olivia negotiates.
Where Greg attempted desperately to make a good impression, Olivia appears comfortable enough to challenge the family herself.
And where Jack immediately distrusted Greg, Olivia may have figured him out surprisingly quickly.
Skyler Gisondo plays Henry Focker, the young man responsible for bringing these two personalities together.
His relationship with Olivia gives the franchise its new generational centre.
Greg and Pam were once the young couple attempting to survive parental interference.
Now they are the parents.
Teri Polo returns as Pam, while Blythe Danner reprises her role as Dina Byrnes.
Owen Wilson is also back as Kevin Rawley, ensuring Greg’s impossibly charming former romantic rival remains somewhere inside the family orbit.
Beanie Feldstein joins the film as Samantha Focker, Greg and Pam’s daughter, while Eduardo Franco is among the other new additions.
John Hamburg writes and directs Focker-In-Law.
His connection to the franchise goes all the way back to the beginning: Hamburg co-wrote Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers and Little Fockers.
That continuity matters because Focker-In-Law appears very aware of the exact relationships audiences remember from those movies.
The lie detector.
The circle of trust.
Greg’s anxiety around Jack.
Jack’s intelligence background.
Kevin’s persistent presence.
The franchise is not discarding those jokes.
It is changing who gets trapped inside them.
The first Meet the Parents arrived in 2000.
Meet the Fockers followed in 2004, expanding the family through Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand as Greg’s parents.
Little Fockers arrived in 2010.
Focker-In-Law therefore returns to the characters after a sixteen-year gap.
That passage of time has become part of the premise.
Greg and Pam’s children are adults.
Jack and Dina are grandparents.
The questions surrounding marriage and family have moved down another generation.
But apparently one tradition remains intact.
Anyone attempting to enter this family should expect an interrogation.
The difference is that Olivia Jones may be the first person who actually enjoys it.
Focker-In-Law opens in theaters on November 25, 2026.
