We are still waiting for the big trailer and official premiere date announcement for Stranger Things’ final season, season 5. This did not happen at Netflix’s event today, where the streaming giant revealed many of its plans for the year – including the reveal of the third season of The Circle – but during the event, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer spoke about the finale and confirmed that while it marks the end of the series, multiple spinoffs are in development.
“It took a whole year to film this season. By the end, we had recorded 650 hours of footage. So, needless to say, this is our biggest and most ambitious season yet. It's like five blockbuster movies. Pretty insane,” said Ross Duffer, and his brother Matt continued, “At the same time, we think and hope this will be the most personal. It was a very serious and emotional job to film, both for us and for our actors, who have been with us for so long. We've been doing this together for almost ten years. This show means a lot to all of us; everyone gave their heart and soul. We hope – and believe – that this passion will come across on screen as well.”
The Duffers promise that season 5 will be grand and epic, with no time wasted on unnecessary things, offering an intense experience from start to finish. "It will also feel familiar. In terms of scale, this season will be the biggest, but everyone will return to Hawkins, and they will behave with each other just like they did in season 1," Ross Duffer said, with Matt confirming, “This is not the final goodbye to Stranger Things.”
They didn’t reveal anything specific about the spinoffs, but the first one has already arrived – at least in London, where the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow is running in the West End. It’s a prequel story, and it will also be showcased on Broadway in New York in March. Matt Duffer also stated:
“There are several Stranger Things stories waiting to be told and are in development. It's a bit early to talk about them, but we’re deeply involved in each one. It’s very important to us that anything with the name Stranger Things in it is high quality, not self-repetitive, and has a reason to exist – always finding its own path. And it simply has to be cool, or we have to think it’s cool. And we have a lot of things that we think are cool.”
The Duffers’ production company, Upside Down Pictures, will also be releasing other series independent of the franchise in the near future. In 2026, The Boroughs and Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen will be released, which, according to the creators, will carry the “Stranger Things DNA” within them.
