This year, the Academy handed out the golden statues to the best in the industry, and as always, the competition among the best films was fierce, with many unique films in the race. Among the top contenders were the Hungarian-related The Brutalist, Sean Baker’s latest wild dramedy, Anora (a Cinderella parody for some), the papal thriller The Conclave, the controversial The Method, and to many people’s surprise, The Method—even though the Academy isn’t particularly fond of horror films. Of course, there was also Emilia Pérez, which set a record with 13 nominations, making it the non-English language film with the most nominations in Oscar history. The bitter irony of fate is that the big Oscar scandal of the year revolved around Emilia Pérez—the transgender lead actress, Karla Sofía Gascón, whose Islamophobic and racist outbursts from a few years ago resurfaced. Well, yes: Emilia Pérez was left empty-handed. Despite a record-breaking 13 nominations, it only won a major award in the Best Supporting Actress category, which went to Zoë Saldaña. Anora, on the other hand, practically swept the awards: it was named Best Picture, Sean Baker took Best Director, and its star, Mikey Madison, won Best Actress. The Brutalist also mostly came up short—while Adrien Brody added another golden statue to his collection, Anora snatched away the other major awards from him.
