Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys Put Their Relationship to the Test in Hilarious Variety Challenge

Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys Put Their Relationship to the Test in Hilarious Variety Challenge

Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys may have spent years playing one of television’s most complicated married couples, but Variety has given the longtime real-life partners a considerably lighter relationship test.

In a new video accompanying their Variety cover story, the former The Americans co-stars sit down to discover just how well they actually know each other.

The rules are simple.

Russell and Rhys are asked a series of questions about one another, covering everything from personal favourites and habits to their careers and life together.

What follows is considerably less about keeping score than watching two people who have known each other for years attempt to predict exactly what the other person is going to say.

Sometimes they know immediately.

Sometimes they are very confidently wrong.

And occasionally the argument over the correct answer becomes more entertaining than the question itself.

Their easy chemistry will be familiar to anyone who followed The Americans, the acclaimed FX espionage drama in which Russell and Rhys played Soviet intelligence officers Elizabeth and Philip Jennings.

The pair met professionally through the series and eventually became a couple during its run, although their real-life dynamic could hardly be further removed from the tense, secretive marriage they portrayed on screen.

Years later, they remain unusually good at making each other laugh.

The Variety challenge captures that relationship without turning it into a conventional celebrity interview. Instead of discussing every project through carefully prepared promotional answers, Russell and Rhys tease one another, disagree over details and reveal the small pieces of information that accumulate after years together.

The video also arrives at an especially successful moment in both of their careers.

Russell continues to receive major awards attention for her performance as Kate Wyler in Netflix’s political drama The Diplomat, while Rhys has enjoyed another strong television year with roles including Widow’s Bay and The Beast in Me.

Their joint Variety appearance comes during the 2026 Emmy season, with both actors once again part of the awards conversation.

Yet one of the most appealing things about the interview is how little they behave like a carefully packaged Hollywood power couple.

In their accompanying Variety conversation, Russell and Rhys describe maintaining a relatively ordinary life away from the industry, surrounded largely by friends who are not actors.

Russell even jokes about not considering herself particularly famous, despite a career stretching from Felicity and The Americans to The Diplomat.

That slightly self-deprecating attitude carries into the couples challenge.

There is no attempt to prove that they know absolutely everything about one another.

Instead, the fun comes from the gaps.

A favourite movie might seem obvious until the other person has to name it. A long-established habit can suddenly become surprisingly difficult to describe when someone turns it into a quiz question.

And after more than a decade together, both still appear capable of surprising each other.

For fans of The Americans, the video also provides the amusing experience of watching two performers once famous for portraying intensely controlled Russian spies behave like almost the exact opposite of Elizabeth and Philip Jennings.

No disguises.

No coded messages.

No international conspiracy.

Just Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys discovering whether years together have actually made them experts on each other.
