The Big Bang Theory is a modern sitcom classic, and though it has ended, it lives on through spinoffs and remains iconic today. The show features a range of memorable characters, led by the main trio—Sheldon, Leonard, and Penny—but also includes some hilariously quirky characters, such as Rajesh Ramayan Koothrappali. Raj, an Indian-born astrophysicist and geek, famously can only flirt with women after drinking, which he doesn’t handle well. Originally, he was supposed to have a much simpler (and less exciting) name: Dave! Nothing against “Dave,” of course, but it doesn’t quite capture the uniqueness of an Indian scientist as well as Raj Koothrappali.

According to The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series, Raj’s character was originally conceived as “Dave,” an American-born guy with Indian immigrant parents. But the show’s co-creator, Bill Prady, decided to adjust the character to match Kunal Nayyar, the actor eventually cast in the role. After hearing Nayyar’s accent and seeing his performance, the team decided to make Raj a native of India instead.

Once this change was made, they asked Nayyar for input on the character’s new name, as “Dave” no longer fit with the character’s identity. Nayyar suggested the name “Rajesh” and then worked with the creators to select an appropriate last name. Though born in London, Nayyar grew up in New Delhi until the early 2000s, so he was well-acquainted with Indian culture. He knew the name “Rajesh” would need an authentic surname to match. He ultimately came up with “Koothrappali,” a name commonly found in southern India. And the rest is history.
