For a long time, video game adaptations seemed cursed, struggling to achieve anything more than mediocrity. But Arcane, set in the League of Legends universe, shattered expectations and proved it could be done right. If you’re mourning the fact that the series only ran for two seasons, don’t despair—several spinoffs are in development, and some of them will continue the stories of characters we came to love in the main series!
Christian Linke, Arcane’s co-creator, recently spoke with The Direct about the future of the franchise. Linke confirmed that multiple spinoffs and even a continuation of the main series are in the works. While these projects haven’t yet entered production, the team is moving forward "aggressively" to bring new League of Legends series to life as soon as possible.
“I can confidently say that we have a few productions that have grown out of Arcane. Right now, we’re in the development stage for these projects. We’re not deep into production yet, but we’re pushing aggressively on a few that we’re very excited about. [...] One thing’s for sure: we want to tell more stories from this world. Some of these in-development stories introduce entirely new characters from our IP, while others will function as continuations of Arcane,” Linke shared.
The League of Legends universe is rich with characters, each with a well-crafted backstory, providing a wealth of material for potential spinoffs. One of Arcane’s cast members even hinted that their character could return and take on a larger role in a sequel series.
Amanda Overton, one of the series’ writers, shared her thoughts with GamesRadar+ on the locations and heroes she would personally like to explore in the spinoffs:
“I find Ionia incredibly exciting. It has the potential for a distinctively Eastern-style story and visual aesthetic, which would stand out completely from Arcane’s look. [...] As for Noxus, which you mentioned, we’ve already shown quite a bit of it in Arcane. Personally, I’d say let’s dive into something entirely new! [...] There are so many amazing heroes we could delve deeper into. This world also has plenty of fascinating locations. I’d love to see a matriarchal society portrayed on screen—it’s something we haven’t really seen much of in TV. Up in Freljord, you have such a society, and I thought, ‘Wow, we’ve never explored anything quite like this.’”
Ella Purnell, who voices Jinx, stated in an interview that she doesn’t want to be pigeonholed into video game adaptations. Regardless of what happens to her character in Season 2, it’s likely we won’t see her return to the role anytime soon.
