Like everything, Stranger Things must come to an end, especially since the child actors have grown up. The crew is currently deep into filming the decisive finale, and hopefully, the fifth season will be completed next year, as Gaten Matarazzo recently announced. However, one thing is certain: there won’t be a dry eye left, as David Harbour revealed that everyone was in tears when they set out to create the last episode.
The New York Comic Con is currently underway, and Harbour was a special guest on a live episode of the show Happy Sad Confused, which was reported on by People magazine among others. The actor shared that they recently held a table read for the finale—the last episode that wraps everything up—so the end has officially begun. Everyone present was acutely aware of this, making the event quite emotional. “Look, I have very strong ties to this series, so I have a very strong opinion about it. And that might not align with yours if you’re a fan of the show. I’m an actor in it. So I have a perspective on how this all works in practice [...] So I can be very critical of the series at times,” Harbour began, noting that the eighth and final episode of the fifth season turned out magnificent: “They overcame the ultimate hurdle, so this is one of the best episodes the creators have ever put together.”
“When we read the end of the episode—I emphasize: we only read it—about halfway through, people started to cry. Then, in the last twenty minutes, they were sobbing uncontrollably [...]. Noah Schnapp was my favorite in this regard. I think part of it is because for these kids, the series represented their childhood. I mean, they started the show when they were 11 or 12—and now boom, here we are reading the finale. Ten years have passed, and now we’re analyzing this issue, and they executed it so well, it’s so beautifully done. [...] It’s a great episode, a great season, and you’re going to love it!” Harbour elaborated.
Of course, we can only speculate about what the conclusion will be like. Practically anything could happen, as many characters have worn that infamous plot armor, meaning the creators were protecting them. However, the last season could have a bittersweet ending. Will Tizi make a self-sacrifice to finally get rid of Vecna? Or does Will need to make this sacrifice, having also ventured into the alternate dimension in the first season? This will be revealed in 2025.
