Finding the perfect nanny is supposed to make family life easier.
Netflix’s Not a Stranger suggests it might also be the fastest way to destroy it.
The streaming service has released the official trailer for its new Turkish psychological drama, known locally as Seni Tanıyorum, starring Elçin Sangu, Melis Sezen and Ozan Dolunay.
At the centre of the story is Funda, played by Sangu.
After giving birth, Funda put her career as a painter on hold.
Motherhood became the centre of her life, but the desire to return to her art never disappeared.
Now she finally feels ready.
There is only one major problem.
She needs someone she can trust with her daughter.
Then Nazlı arrives.
Played by Melis Sezen, Nazlı initially appears to be exactly the person Funda has been waiting for.
She is attentive.
Calm.
Observant.
She seems to understand immediately what the family needs.
Most importantly, she allows Funda to imagine that returning to her old life may actually be possible.
For the first time since becoming a mother, Funda can begin thinking about herself as an artist again rather than exclusively as a parent.
The arrangement should be perfect.
The trailer makes it obvious that it is not.
Nazlı may have entered the household as hired help, but she quickly becomes far more deeply involved in the family than anyone expected.
Her interest in Funda, her husband İlker and their daughter begins feeling increasingly personal.
Small moments become uncomfortable.
Questions linger slightly too long.
Observations that initially sound caring begin to feel invasive.
And the apparently helpful nanny gradually starts looking less like an employee and more like someone studying the family from the inside.
Ozan Dolunay plays İlker, Funda’s husband.
On the surface, Funda and İlker appear to have built a stable, comfortable life together.
They have a child.
A home.
Careers.
A family structure that seems secure enough for Funda to begin reclaiming the part of herself she put aside after becoming a mother.
Nazlı’s arrival begins testing how secure any of it really is.
That is where Not a Stranger appears to move beyond the familiar “dangerous nanny” thriller.
The central threat is not simply whether Nazlı has a hidden agenda.
It is what her presence reveals about the people who hired her.
Secrets already exist inside the family.
Desires have been suppressed.
Resentments have been ignored.
And the relationship between Funda and İlker may not be nearly as uncomplicated as it first appears.
Nazlı does not necessarily create every crack.
She may simply be the person who notices where they already are.
Netflix describes the series as a psychological, suspenseful slow-burn drama built around secrets and mind games.
That tone is immediately visible in the official trailer.
There are no supernatural monsters.
No masked killer stalking the house.
The danger comes from proximity.
Nazlı has access to the most private parts of the family’s life.
She sees how they speak to one another.
How they behave around their daughter.
Where their routines break down.
What Funda misses while she is working.
What İlker says when his wife is not listening.
And once somebody has been invited that deeply into a household, removing them can become much more complicated than simply ending an employment contract.
Melis Sezen’s performance appears designed around that uncertainty.
Nazlı rarely needs to behave openly threateningly.
Her unsettling quality comes from how difficult she is to read.
A warm expression can become suspicious depending on what the audience already knows.
A helpful comment can carry another meaning.
Even genuine affection for the child can become frightening once questions emerge about why Nazlı wanted access to this particular family in the first place.
Elçin Sangu has a very different challenge as Funda.
Her character is not simply a woman who accidentally hires the wrong person.
She is already navigating an identity crisis.
Motherhood has changed the structure of her life.
Returning to painting means confronting the guilt and pressure that can come with wanting something outside the family.
Nazlı appears at exactly the moment when Funda is most vulnerable to someone offering a solution.
That makes the relationship between the two women especially interesting.
At first, Nazlı represents freedom.
If someone trustworthy is caring for her daughter, Funda can paint again.
She can work.
She can recover the part of herself that existed before motherhood became all-consuming.
But that freedom comes at a price.
Every hour Funda spends rebuilding her own life gives Nazlı another hour inside it.
The trailer appears to understand how psychologically effective that contradiction can be.
Funda needs Nazlı.
Then she becomes afraid of Nazlı.
But by the time that fear arrives, Nazlı may already know far too much.
The series was created and written by Tuğba Doğan, with Mert Baykal directing.
Alongside Sangu, Sezen and Dolunay, the cast includes Cemal Hünal, Efe Taşdelen, Arbil Tabur, Esra Şahin and Nihan Okutucu.
Not a Stranger also fits neatly into Netflix’s growing catalogue of Turkish psychological dramas, where domestic relationships often become the starting point for much larger mysteries.
The setting gives this one an especially intimate form.
A family home should be the safest possible place.
A nanny is somebody parents are required to trust.
The entire premise therefore depends on one deeply uncomfortable question:
What if the person you carefully selected to protect your child knows exactly how to use that trust against you?
The official trailer seems determined not to answer too much.
Instead, it focuses on atmosphere.
Nazlı’s increasingly unsettling behaviour.
Funda’s growing suspicion.
Ilker caught somewhere inside the changing relationship between the two women.
And the sense that there is a reason Nazlı chose this particular household.
That final question may ultimately be the most important.
She is not simply a stranger who walked through the door.
The title suggests something much more personal.
Perhaps somebody already knows her.
Perhaps she already knows them.
Or perhaps the family’s greatest mistake is assuming that the person standing inside their home is a stranger at all.
