Illumination has released the trailer for Not Alone, a new original animated sci-fi romantic comedy starring Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez.
Chalamet voices Joe, an introverted rocket mechanic who lives a quiet life alone, while Gomez voices Fran, a brilliant astro-botanist developing the world’s first plant-fueled rocket. When the two are brought together for the rocket’s launch, there are immediate sparks — unfortunately, neither of them seems especially skilled at romance.
Then the aliens arrive, because apparently awkward dating was not complicated enough.
Joe’s life is turned upside down when three tiny alien fugitives — Dunk, Welly and Shirm — take refuge in his home. They are on the run from Officer Zandro, an overzealous and not particularly competent intergalactic lawman, and they believe Fran’s rocket may be their only way back home.
That gives Not Alone a very charming setup: part romantic comedy, part alien escape adventure, part Illumination creature-chaos machine. The trailer appears to lean into a softer, dreamier mood than the studio’s louder franchises, while still keeping the cute, mischievous character design that made the Minions such a global force.
The voice cast is strong, too. Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan and Jamie Demetriou voice the three aliens, while Brett Goldstein plays Officer Zandro. Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris are also part of the supporting cast.
The film is directed by Eric Guillon, Claire Dodgson and Jonathan Del Val, all of whom have deep Illumination experience behind the scenes. That makes Not Alone especially interesting as an original project from a studio often associated with major franchises like Despicable Me, Minions and Sing.
For fans of animated movies, Not Alone looks like a sweet and slightly chaotic big-screen adventure about loneliness, connection and the very reasonable possibility that your love life might improve after three alien blobs crash into your house.
Not Alone opens in theaters on April 16, 2027.
