Netflix has released the official trailer for Ricky Gervais’ Alley Cats, a new adult animated comedy series created by and starring Ricky Gervais.
The setup is exactly as odd as it sounds: a group of feral British cats from different corners of society wander the streets, cause havoc, fight for survival and somehow still find time to ruminate on the meaning of life. So, basically, cats doing what cats already do — but with more swearing, social commentary and existential despair.
The trailer leans into the contrast between cute animal animation and deeply adult comedy. These are not cosy cartoon pets curled up in a warm living room. They are scrappy, opinionated, foul-mouthed strays living in a world run by humans, which gives the series a neat little satirical edge. From the outside, they look like alley cats. From the inside, they are angry little philosophers with fleas.
That tone feels very much in Gervais’ lane. His best-known work often mixes sharp comedy with loneliness, discomfort and a slightly bruised kind of humanity. Alley Cats appears to take that same instinct and filter it through a group of animated animals who are rude enough to say the quiet part loudly and small enough to fit in a bin.
The voice cast includes Ricky Gervais, Tom Basden, Andrew Brooke, David Earl, Kerry Godliman, Jo Hartley, Diane Morgan, Natalie Cassidy and Tony Way. That gives the show a strong British comedy ensemble, especially for viewers who already enjoy Gervais’ recurring circle of collaborators.
The animation is also part of the appeal. Produced in bold 2D style, Alley Cats looks less like polished family-friendly animal comedy and more like something grubbier, sharper and deliberately rough around the edges. That suits the premise. These cats should not look too clean. They are not here to sell toys. They are here to judge humanity from a wall and maybe knock something over for sport.
For fans of adult animated series, Alley Cats looks like one of Netflix’s more distinctive comedy releases of the year. It has the simple pleasure of animals behaving badly, but underneath that is the familiar Gervais machinery: absurdity, sentiment, cruelty, loneliness and the faint suspicion that everyone is only pretending to know what they are doing.
Ricky Gervais’ Alley Cats premieres globally on Netflix on August 7, 2026.
