SOULM8TE Trailer Gives the M3GAN Universe a Deadly Android Lover

A new trailer has arrived for SOULM8TE, the latest film from the M3GAN universe — and this time, the killer doll energy is moving into much more adult territory.

Directed and co-written by Kate Dolan, SOULM8TE follows a grieving engineer who brings home an advanced companion android after the death of his wife. The idea is simple enough: create comfort, companionship and a version of love that never leaves. Naturally of love that never leaves. Naturally, because this is a Blumhouse and Atomic Monster project, that comfort quickly begins to look a lot like obsession.

Lily Sullivan stars as the android companion, while David Rysdahl plays the widower testing the prototype. Claudia Doumit also appears in the cast. Entertainment Weekly describes the film as an erotic thriller inspired by titles like Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction, while still keeping it connected to the M3GAN universe. (ew.com)

That makes SOULM8TE an interesting expansion of the franchise. M3GAN explored childhood, parenting, artificial intelligence and emotional dependence through the lens of a creepy little robot best friend. SOULM8TE appears to take similar questions into adult relationships: what happens when grief, desire and technology all get wired into the same machine?

The trailer leans into that discomfort. This android is not built to scare children or dance down hallways. She is built to fulfil emotional and romantic needs — which may be even more dangerous. A machine designed to love unconditionally sounds comforting until the word “unconditionally” starts feeling less like devotion and more like a threat.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment describes the film as a provocative thriller about coded devotion and obsession, with SOULM8TE arriving digitally on August 1. The release is available to watch at home with no subscription required. (uphe.com)

For fans of sci-fi horror movies, SOULM8TE looks like a smart way to widen the M3GAN universe without simply repeating the same formula. It is still about artificial intelligence learning human attachment in the worst possible way — but now the fear is more intimate, more seductive and possibly much harder to switch off.

SOULM8TE premieres on digital platforms on August 1, 2026.
