‘Squid Game’ Cast Breaks Down Mingle Game Set Design, Editing, Cinematography, Lighting & More

Step into the unsettling beauty of Squid Game as the cast and crew break down every detail in Season 2’s Mingle Game, where the cast and creators reveal how a carousel of flashing lights, children’s songs, and psychological tension came to life. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at how one of the show’s most surreal and suspenseful sequences came to life.

Director Hwang Dong Hyuk explains how he wanted the actors to feel like contestants in the actual game by building a fully practical set (which only took 3 months) with a rotating platform that can hold 300 people. Designer Chae Kyoung Sun shares how 2,000 bulbs lit the room with an eerie dreamlike brilliance, while cinematographer Kim Ji Yong captured the chaos with close, kinetic shots that made the viewer feel like a contestant as they were watching.

Composer Jung Jaeil breaks down his deceptively brilliant take on a score that evokes nostalgia and dread in equal measure. Editor Nam Na-young walks us through the intercuts hinting at unlikely alliances, and Lee Jung Jae reflects on the quiet burden weighing on Gi-hun. From precise framing choices to red-and-blue lighting callbacks that signal pivotal moments, the team explains how they crafted a scene that’s as layered as it is terrifying.

'Squid Game' Season 3 premieres on Netflix June 27, 2025.
