Hawkins has survived another disaster.
Naturally, something terrible is already growing underneath it.
Netflix has released the official trailer for Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Season 2, bringing Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, Max and Nikki back together for another animated mystery set inside one of television’s most famous supernatural towns.
The new season arrives only months after the animated Stranger Things spin-off made its debut, and this time the Hawkins Investigators Club has officially embraced its role as the town’s first line of defence against things nobody else is prepared to believe exist.
Unfortunately, Hawkins is giving them plenty to investigate.
Season 2 picks up directly after the first-season finale, where the group defeated the Horde Queen and prevented another gateway to the Upside Down from opening.
For approximately five minutes, that probably seemed like a victory.
Now strange flowers are appearing across town.
Ghostly figures are being spotted.
Small supernatural creatures are multiplying.
And somewhere beneath Hawkins, another mystery is beginning to wake up.
The new trailer leans heavily into the young-detective energy that helped distinguish Tales From ’85 from the live-action Stranger Things series.
Dustin proudly describes the Hawkins Investigators Club — or HIC — as the town’s first line of defence against paranormal threats.
The comparison to classic Scooby-Doo-style mystery adventures is impossible to miss.
The kids have equipment.
They have theories.
They have a club.
What they do not have is any guarantee that the monsters they are chasing can actually be killed.
That becomes particularly concerning when the group begins encountering what appear to be ghosts.
Season 2 takes place with Valentine’s Day approaching, which should theoretically mean dances, crushes, arcade visits and the usual teenage problems.
Instead, Hawkins is being overwhelmed by what Netflix describes as mysterious ghostly apparitions and a swarm of creatures known as “hate sprites.”
The Hawkins Investigators Club must determine what is causing the disturbances before another gate to the Upside Down can be opened.
The trailer suggests that several seemingly unrelated events may actually be connected.
One of the biggest clues involves strange iridescent flowers.
The flowers first became important at the end of Season 1, when a mysterious blue bloom appeared in connection with the Upside Down.
Now similar plants are beginning to surface around Hawkins.
That would already be worrying.
Unfortunately, Nikki and Max apparently decide that the flowers look attractive enough to sell around town.
Which means a potentially supernatural organism is about to be distributed all over Hawkins just before Valentine’s Day.
It is a wonderfully terrible idea.
Showrunner Eric Robles has revealed that the flowers contain a supernatural secret, and their rapid spread creates a much larger problem for the group.
Whatever is happening beneath Hawkins may no longer remain underground for very long.
The new mystery also takes the characters somewhere Stranger Things has never explored before.
Hawkins’ abandoned silver mines.
The mines appear to be directly connected to the paranormal activity surrounding the town, giving Tales From ’85 an opportunity to expand Hawkins beyond the locations audiences already know from the live-action series.
Familiar places still return.
Hawkins Middle School remains part of the story.
So does the Palace Arcade.
But Season 2 is increasingly interested in unexplored corners of the town and the history buried underneath them.
That fits the animated series particularly well.
Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 takes place between Seasons 2 and 3 of the original live-action show, during a period where the main characters believed the immediate Upside Down crisis had temporarily been contained.
Eleven had closed the gate beneath Hawkins Lab.
The Mind Flayer had been cut off.
The town was supposed to be safe.
Tales From ’85 exists inside that gap.
It explores strange events the characters could plausibly experience without contradicting what happens when the live-action story resumes.
The first season established that creatures could still emerge from a strange combination of Hawkins Lab experimentation and matter connected to the Upside Down.
Season 2 appears ready to push that concept further.
The full young Hawkins crew returns.
Brooklyn Davey Norstedt voices Eleven.
Luca Diaz returns as Mike.
Benjamin Plessala voices Will.
Braxton Quinney returns as Dustin.
Elisha “EJ” Williams voices Lucas.
Jolie Hoang-Rappaport returns as Max.
And Odessa A’zion once again voices Nikki Baxter, the new character created specifically for Tales From ’85.
The wider voice cast also connects the animated story to familiar Stranger Things characters.
Jeremy Jordan voices Steve Harrington, while Brett Gipson plays Hopper.
Janeane Garofalo returns as Anna Baxter.
Lou Diamond Phillips voices Daniel Fischer.
Alessandra Antonelli plays Nancy Wheeler, with additional returning performers including Valeria Rodriguez and Jack Griffo.
Eric Robles remains showrunner and executive producer.
Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer also executive produce through Upside Down Pictures alongside Hilary Leavitt, Shawn Levy through 21 Laps and Dan Cohen.
Flying Bark Productions handles the animation.
One of the most interesting aspects of the series is how animation changes what a Stranger Things story can look like.
The live-action show has always drawn heavily from 1980s genre cinema.
Tales From ’85 can push those influences even further.
Monsters can become stranger.
Action sequences can become larger.
The characters can move through exaggerated environments without losing the visual identity of Hawkins.
Season 2’s trailer embraces that freedom.
There are glowing flowers.
Shadowy apparitions.
Creatures attacking from the darkness.
Paranormal investigations in the woods.
And moments that feel almost like a Saturday-morning adventure series suddenly colliding with supernatural horror.
That combination gives Tales From ’85 its own identity within the franchise.
The stakes may involve another possible gateway to the Upside Down, but the tone remains focused on childhood adventure.
The kids still play arcade games.
They still worry about friendships and relationships.
Valentine’s Day still matters.
They just happen to be dealing with supernatural infestations at the same time.
And the continuing mystery may be larger than one season.
Robles has already said that the stories of Tales From ’85 are connected rather than completely isolated adventures.
The blue flower introduced previously now appears to be feeding directly into the second-season plot.
That suggests Hawkins may be developing its own hidden supernatural mythology alongside the events viewers already know from Stranger Things.
For the Hawkins Investigators Club, however, the immediate problem is considerably simpler.
Something is haunting the town.
The flowers are spreading.
The monsters may be ghosts.
And whatever is hiding inside those abandoned mines appears increasingly interested in opening another door to the Upside Down.
Apparently, a quiet Valentine’s Day was never really an option.
