Scream arrived in the mid-90s, right when the slasher genre—or rather, the slasher cycle—was past its prime. So, Wes Craven and the team made it self-reflective and even somewhat parodic, but that didn’t mean that Ghostface, the iconic killer, didn’t deliver some stomach-churning bloody murder scenes. In the latest installment, which was rated with the strictest age restriction in our country, Ghostface even picked up a gun… but according to the franchise star, Mason Gooding, that’s nothing compared to what’s coming in the seventh part.
Filming for Scream 7 is in full swing, directed by Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter of the original Scream, who is taking on the role of director this time. Gooding spoke to Variety about Ghostface’s next "adventure" in connection with the premiere of the slasher-comedy Heart Eyes, scheduled around Valentine's Day. The actor's main point was that we’ve had six Scream films so far, but we haven't seen anything yet when it comes to the horrors.
"The new movie pretty much amplifies everything we've seen before, and nothing proves this better than the fact that Kevin Williamson is back to direct, who wrote the original story. I think in this, viewers will meet the most brutal version of Ghostface ever. I don’t want to spoil anything, but there are a few horrific acts targeting the human body that I feel Kevin is opening up new horizons with. [...] It's grotesque, but in a good way. […] We have a prosthetic among the props that really made my stomach turn. You'll recognize what I’m talking about when you see the final result; it’s definitely an incredible piece. An incredibly talented VFX team has gathered for the production, working from dawn to dusk," Gooding said.
The actor also emphasized that it’s a huge honor for him to work (again) with Neve Campbell, and because of this, he feels like he’s become part of film history in some way. Among the big returnees are Campbell and Gooding, as well as Courteney Cox, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Roger L. Jackson, Matthew Lillard, and Scott Foley. If everything goes according to plan, we’ll be able to see Scream 7 by the end of next February."
