A24 has released the official first look at The Death of Robin Hood, a darker and more reflective take on one of folklore’s most famous outlaws.
Directed by Michael Sarnoski, the film stars Hugh Jackman as Robin Hood, but this is clearly not the cheerful, swashbuckling version of the legend. Instead, The Death of Robin Hood finds the outlaw badly wounded after a battle he believed would be his last. As he struggles with the weight of his past, a mysterious woman offers him a chance at salvation.
That premise immediately gives the film a more sombre edge. Robin Hood is usually remembered as a heroic figure: the noble thief, the archer of Sherwood, the man who stole from the rich to help the poor. This version appears to look beyond the myth and ask what kind of person might be left behind after a lifetime of violence, rebellion and bloodshed.
Hugh Jackman looks like a strong fit for that kind of late-career, battle-worn Robin. He has often played characters defined by physical endurance and emotional damage, and this first look suggests a performance built around exhaustion, regret and survival rather than easy heroism.
Jodie Comer also stars, alongside Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett and Noah Jupe. With Sarnoski behind the camera, the film feels especially intriguing. After Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One, he has shown a clear interest in genre stories with grief, intimacy and emotional pressure under the surface.
For audiences expecting a traditional Robin Hood adventure, this film may come as something much stranger and harsher. A24’s version seems less interested in legend-building and more interested in what happens when the legend is already dying.
The Death of Robin Hood opens in theaters on June 19, 2026.
