Johnny Depp’s big return to Hollywood will be in the action thriller Day Drinker, which is being produced at Lionsgate under the direction of Marc Webb. It was previously announced that the Oscar-winning Penélope Cruz will star in the film, and now Madelyn Cline has joined the cast. Cline, known for her role as Sarah in Outer Banks, and who played Dave Bautista’s girlfriend in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, is the latest addition.
Marc Webb, known for the popular romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer and the Amazing Spider-Man films, will direct the movie, which will be released next month. This will be Webb’s latest film, Snow White, which has already made headlines due to its controversial live-action approach by Disney. Day Drinker is based on a screenplay by Zach Dean, who also wrote The Tomorrow War and the upcoming The Gorge for AppleTV+, and worked on the script for Fast & Furious 10. The story is currently under wraps, but it is known to follow a luxury cruise waiter who meets a mysterious “day drinker,” and the pair unexpectedly get tangled up in a criminal underworld game.
Amidst the scandals surrounding his divorce, Depp, who had been sidelined in Hollywood, appeared in the French historical drama Jeanne du Barry - The Mistress after winning the defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife. He also voiced the titular character in the animated comedy Johnny Puff: Secret Mission, which was released on VOD last year. Additionally, Depp shot his second directorial project, Modi, partially in Budapest, which premiered in Italy last year. Terry Gilliam, director of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, cast him as Satan in his developing new film.
This will be Depp’s first collaboration with Marc Webb, while his relationship with Cruz goes back to their joint appearance in the 2001 film Blow.
