This year, Disney is releasing two remakes in theaters with a short break in between. One is Snow White, which doesn’t have great prospects due to its lead actress Rachel Zegler and her controversial statements. On the other hand, Lilo & Stitch: The Star Dog seems like a much more conventional, harmless, and heartfelt family film based on its first full trailer, which you can watch below.
The original Lilo & Stitch, an animated film, was released in 2002, over 20 years ago, directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. The remake follows the basic story, where a cute furry creature, Stitch, is forced to flee as an intergalactic federation is after him. He was designed to bring chaos and destruction, but he only does so in a playful way. Still, he turns the lives of people on Earth upside down when he arrives. A Hawaiian girl, Lilo, takes him in, and she is raised by her sister after they lost their parents. Although it’s not easy, over the course of the story, they will form a family with Stitch. Of course, the past haunts them, and no one can avoid facing it.
Lilo & Stitch: The Star Dog will hit theaters in May. The film is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) based on a screenplay by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright (Moana) and Mike Van Waes. Maia Kealoha plays Lilo, and Stitch’s voice is once again provided by Chris Sanders. Other notable cast members include Sydney Agudong, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, Tia Carrere, Amy Hill, and Jason Scott Lee.
