Witcher fans have had plenty to sink their teeth into lately: the continuation of the Netflix series (recently filmed), the first teaser for The Witcher 4 revealed at The Game Awards, and Andrzej Sapkowski’s latest book, Rozdroże Kruków (The Crossroads of Crows), which hasn’t yet been officially translated into Hungarian. Sapkowski returned to the Witcher universe with this new story 11 years after Season of Storms, setting it during the events of The Last Wish and without altering the timeline of the main pentalogy. The book, which debuted in Poland in November, confirms Geralt’s birth year in the novel's universe: 1211.
This means that during the events of the most recent video game, The Witcher 3, and its expansion Blood and Wine (set in 1272–1275), Geralt would be 61–64 years old. That’s remarkably youthful for someone his age—but not surprising for a mutant monster hunter. Sapkowski has previously explained that Witchers age much more slowly than ordinary humans; a sixty-year-old Witcher would be physically comparable to an average person in their mid-forties.
What might surprise fans, however, is that Yennefer could technically be old enough to be Geralt’s mother in the novels' timeline. The sorceress was born in 1173 (a fact revealed in The Tower of the Swallow), making her 38 years older than Geralt. This means that Yennefer is nearly a century old during the events of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. But, much like Geralt, her age doesn’t show—thanks to the perks of magic.
It’s important to emphasize that these details come from the books, where Geralt is canonically born in 1211. In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Vesemir states that Geralt is "nearly a century old," while in Netflix’s live-action series, Geralt could theoretically be Yennefer’s father, as the age gap is flipped, making him over 30 years her senior. The varying timelines across the books, games, and show highlight significant differences between these mediums. However, given that Sapkowski is the original creator of the Witcher franchise, the year 1211 will likely serve as a key reference point moving forward.
As for Rozdroże Kruków, there’s no international or Hungarian release date yet. The English translation is expected in 2025. Meanwhile, Season 4 of the Netflix series is set to premiere next year (check out new set photos of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt). The Witcher 4 game is still a long way off, but you can read more here and here about its expanded map and why Ciri will be the protagonist.
