This is how Robert Downey Jr. is preparing for the role of Doctor Doom, according to the creators of Avengers 5-6, and of course, we expect nothing less from him.

At last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the Marvel fanbase was shaken by the news — and even more so by the reveal that Robert Downey Jr. would be behind the Doctor Doom mask. We certainly didn’t see this coming, that he would take on the villainous role, even though Iron Man and Victor von Doom have a shared history in the comic books. The star will surely do an excellent job, as he is a seasoned and Oscar-winning actor, and accordingly, he is thoroughly preparing for the role, doing serious creative and research work to get ready.

Coming soon to Netflix is Anthony and Joe Russo’s latest sci-fi film, Electronic State. The duo gave an interview to Entertainment Tonight about it, and they also touched upon the upcoming Avengers films, as they are set to start filming one of them, Doomsday, this year. Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Doctor Doom in the movie. The Russos shared that the star is, of course, preparing for the role with the seriousness we expect from him. Joe Russo said:

“He’s writing a backstory for the character, coming up with costume ideas... He just loves truly complex, multidimensional characters, and I think he sees great potential in this one.”

For now, we can only speculate how Marvel Studios and the creative team will make Doctor Doom look just like the late Tony Stark. Of course, the multiverse offers plenty of possibilities, especially since there’s a storyline in the comics where Doom temporarily steals Iron Man’s identity. It’s also certain that the villain often wears a mask in Marvel Comics, so it’s possible that we won’t see his real face (which is disfigured due to an accident) in the films either. But given the star power of Robert Downey Jr., that’s unlikely, and we can expect at least a flashback sequence in which we learn about the MCU's Doom origin story. This article outlines a few possible scenarios.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to start production in April, with a release set for May 2026. Here, you can see some related concept art. The Russo brothers also talked about how long the upcoming films, including this one and its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, will be.

Alongside five other actors, a well-known character actor has joined the cast of The Last of Us Season 2, portraying a surprising character who is barely mentioned in the game.
