Writers Say David Harbour is Partly to Blame for the Delay of Violent Night 2, But He’s Not the Only One

Not long after its December 2022 release, Violent Night was greenlit for a sequel, with David Harbour set to reprise his role as the disillusioned Santa Claus who dishes out justice to bad guys in more than just lumps of coal. However, production for the sequel has yet to begin. The writers assure fans the project isn’t canceled, but Harbour’s packed schedule has been a significant obstacle. That said, they admit they haven’t finished the script either.

This year, Harbour has been busy filming the final season of Stranger Things. Before that, he worked on his MCU return in Thunderbolts, set to debut next spring, and it’s not out of the question that he’ll reprise his role as Red Guardian in the next Avengers film. Meanwhile, screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller—known for the Sonic the Hedgehog movies—spoke to ScreenRant while promoting the upcoming Sonic 3, explaining how both Harbour’s and their own schedules have slowed progress on Violent Night 2.

“We’re trying to finish the script draft, so we’re making good progress,” Miller said. “But Sonic 3 coming out right when the Violent Night 2 script deadline hits is a bit distracting—though it’s a nice problem to have.” Casey added that as soon as the interview wrapped, they would get back to work on finishing the script.

“I wish we could announce a release date, but we’re not there yet. Everyone’s eager to make it happen, so hopefully we’ll have more concrete news soon,” Casey said. “But it’s a bit tricky to schedule around David Harbour these days because he’s a very busy man with some giant mega-franchises that, unfortunately, seem to take priority over us—for reasons I can’t fathom,” he joked.
