The Gray Man 2 Now Being Written by The Russo Brothers for Netflix

The Gray Man sequel is now being worked on, with the Russo brothers hoping to spawn a major franchise.

Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo have confirmed that they are now hard at work on their latest franchise, The Gray Man, with the pair now in the middle of writing a sequel to the action thriller. Speaking with Collider, Joe Russo revealed that wheels are turning on The Gray Man 2, with the follow-up intended as just the first part of what the Russo brothers hope will become a major franchise on Netflix.

“We’re in the middle of it right now. We’re in the middle of working on The Gray Man 2 script, so, again, everything is about the story. We are hard at work, sleeves rolled up, and more to come soon.”

Released in select theaters and on the streaming service last year, The Gray Man is based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Mark Greaney and begins when the CIA’s most skilled mercenary – whose true identity is known to none – accidentally uncovers dark agency secrets, a psychopathic former colleague puts a bounty on his head, setting off a global manhunt by international assassins.

Led by the A-list duo of Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling and Captain America himself Chris Evans, there was a lot of hype surrounding The Gray Man at the time, but sadly this seemed to die faster than one of the nameless henchmen put down by Gosling. Met with mixed reviews from critics, The Gray Man was much better received by audiences, becoming Netflix’s most watched movie across in 84 countries and gaining around 43.55 million viewers.

We currently know nothing about what The Gray Man will involve, but no doubt it will once again take inspiration from the series of novels on which it’s based as well as finding Gosling’s secret agent running for his life.

A Prequel About Chris Evans’ Character is Happening Alongside The Gray Man 2

The Russo brothers have big plans for The Gray Man. A prequel project centered on Chris Evans’ scene-stealing sociopath Lloyd Hansen was recently given the greenlight by Netflix, and while further details remain under wraps, it has been revealed that “Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are behind the script.”

But this prequel and sequel are just the beginning, with Joe Russo previouisly explaining how they plan to craft The Gray Man like chapters in a book. “This is being conceived as a series of films, and again, potentially branching out, we could follow other characters, but we’re not gonna answer every question in the movie,” he explained. “So you’re gonna finish the movie, [and] have a complete story, but you’re still gonna have questions about the wider universe. And I think that’s one way to break the model a little bit, is to not give the audience everything in one film. Don’t have a close-ended narrative. Have an open-ended narrative that’s [like] a chapter in a book.”

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay the latter co-wrote with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and starring Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, Wagner Moura, Julia Butters, Dhanush, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton alongside Gosling and Evans, The Gray Man is available to stream on Netflix.
