Backrooms Turns Internet Horror Into A24’s Next Liminal Nightmare | Official Promo

A24 has released the official promo for Backrooms, the upcoming horror film from Kane Parsons, the creator behind the viral Backrooms YouTube series.

The promo is short, strange and deeply uncomfortable — exactly what a Backrooms movie should be. Instead of relying on conventional monsters or loud horror beats, it leans into something more unsettling: empty rooms, wrong spaces, impossible architecture and the creeping feeling that reality has quietly broken around you.

The film is based on Parsons’ online Backrooms universe, which helped popularise the modern liminal-space horror aesthetic. Endless yellow corridors, fluorescent lights, abandoned office-like spaces and the sense of being somewhere no human being is supposed to reach all became part of a wider internet nightmare. Now, A24 is turning that atmosphere into a theatrical horror film.

Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve lead the cast, with Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell also appearing. Parsons directs the film, making the leap from viral YouTube horror creator to feature filmmaker — a move that feels unusually fitting for this project, because Backrooms was born from the internet’s own visual language in the first place.

What makes the promo effective is how little it explains. That restraint matters. The horror of Backrooms works best when the audience is not given a clean map, a neat mythology or a comfortable answer. The fear comes from not knowing how far the space goes, whether escape is possible, or what might be moving just out of frame.

For horror fans, this movie looks like one of A24’s most intriguing genre releases of the year. It is not just adapting a creepypasta concept; it is bringing a whole internet-born horror language into cinemas, with the potential to make empty space feel terrifying on a much larger scale.

Backrooms opens in theaters on May 29, 2026.
