Seven years ago, unfortunately, Daredevil came to an end, along with other darker-toned Marvel series (well, not all of them were AS dark as Matt Murdock's journey through hell), which brought lesser-known characters into the spotlight. Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and of course Matt's stories culminated in the 2017 series The Defenders. To the fans' great joy, Kevin Feige and his team have given Daredevil the chance to return, but it seems that the series debuting on Disney+ on March 5 might just be the beginning, as Jessica and her companions may also be reborn in the MCU.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming premiere of Resurrection, Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Studios' television division, shared some insights. Winderbaum was reluctant to discuss the future of other characters, which is a good sign, as it hints that they are working on something.
"I can’t say much about this yet, but maybe I can tell you that it’s really exciting to be messing around in this 'playground.' Obviously, we don’t have endless storytelling resources like in the comics, where we can draw anything we come up with. We work with actors, our time is limited, and these are massive productions, especially when we’re building franchises, particularly when these are created for the small screen. But I can reveal that yes, we’ve definitely considered these possibilities, and creatively speaking, it’s extremely exciting, and we’re really thinking about the question," Winderbaum said.
Studio representatives also haven't ruled out the return of Élodie Yung's sexy Elektra and the dangerous Hand clan in the future. "We are one hundred percent occupied with this question. So we're still bouncing around this idea, trying to figure something out," added Sana Amanat, the lead producer.
The Defenders—let’s call them that for simplicity—series were forced to end in 2018 and 2019, due to major restructuring at the time. These Netflix series were produced by Marvel Television, but by the end of the decade, the studio was placed under Marvel Studios, and Netflix canceled the series. For legal reasons, none of the heroes could appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a while, even though on paper, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist were all part of the MCU. Resurrection might indeed pave the way for the others to follow.
