The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is considered one of the best in the MCU, thanks not only to James Gunn's direction and humor but also to the memorable cast, which brought beloved characters to life, even reinventing some of them. One of the fan favorites (second only to Groot, of course) was Drax, played by Dave Bautista. Since then, the star has appeared in both good and bad roles but hasn't changed his previous stance: he’s done with Drax. However, he’s not ruling out playing another Marvel character or even one in the DC universe.
“I’ve absolutely closed the chapter on Drax in my life. Unless James Gunn calls me to do something with Drax, I’m not interested. If James were to call me… But that obviously isn’t going to happen. He’s off doing his own thing now. But yeah, I want to be part of that world, I’m a huge comic book fan, I love that universe. Marvel, DC, it doesn’t matter, I want to be in it. I’ve made that clear to James, as well as to the Russo brothers. I’ve spoken to them personally, to each one of them, and told them, 'Don’t leave me out of this. If there’s a character that fits me and you want me for the role, go ahead, I’m open to it.' So it’s really just about the Drax character being a thing of the past.”
– Bautista said in an interview with ComicBook.com. Why is he talking about this now? It's in relation to In the Lost Lands, which will be released in theaters in May here as well. It’s a dark action-fantasy directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil films), starring his wife, Milla Jovovich, in one of the lead roles, with a story by George R.R. Martin. Wow! Check out the trailer below!
By the way, Gunn recently hinted that he had planned three spinoffs for Guardians of the Galaxy, so it’s possible Bautista wouldn’t have gotten away from Drax so easily if Gunn hadn’t been caught up in a scandal that led him to DC.
