David Fincher, widely regarded as a master of thrillers, has demonstrated his prowess not only in film but also in television, as evidenced by his acclaimed series Mindhunter. Recently, he returned to the big screen with an assassin-themed film starring Michael Fassbender, but he hasn’t forgotten one of his greatest classics: Se7en. This year, in celebration of its 30th anniversary (yes, 30th—feeling old yet?), the film is being re-released in a remastered edition and will also be available on 4K UHD discs. In an interview, Fincher finally revealed the truth about the contents of that box in the film’s shocking finale—and it wasn’t what the long-standing rumor suggested!
Of course, we’re talking about a nearly 30-year-old classic, and chances are you’ve already seen it if you’re a film enthusiast. However, for those who haven’t, consider this your SPOILER WARNING—you might want to skip ahead if you’d prefer to watch Se7en unspoiled!
The film’s plot, which likely influenced James Wan’s Saw, revolves around Kevin Spacey’s character, a religious fanatic and serial killer, who crafts grotesque punishments inspired by the seven deadly sins. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman star as detectives investigating the case. Freeman’s character is the calm and collected veteran, while Pitt’s is the impulsive, hot-headed rookie determined to catch the killer. This dynamic sets up Pitt’s character for a moral trial. The ultimate test comes when the killer manipulates him into committing an act of vigilante justice—a trap he falls into when Spacey’s character convinces him that his wife’s severed head is inside a mysterious box.
Viewers never see the head, only Pitt’s breakdown and subsequent act of murder, fulfilling the killer’s twisted plan. It’s a grim conclusion, to say the least. But did the filmmakers really create a replica of Gwyneth Paltrow’s head for the scene, as many have speculated? Fincher dismissed the theory as absurd:
“No, that’s ridiculous. If I remember correctly, we used a three to three-and-a-half-pound special bag for the shoot. We did some research to calculate Gwyneth Paltrow’s body mass index and determine how much her head would weigh. So, we had an idea of the weight, and if I recall, we even added a weight inside the box. There was also a wig […]. I think we had a bag and a wig, maybe with a little fake blood painted on it so some of the hair stuck together. I remember Morgan Freeman opening perhaps 16 or 17 such boxes. But as I’ve always said, you don’t need to see what’s in the box when you have Morgan Freeman acting it out for you.”
Fincher shared this insight during an interview with Entertainment Weekly while discussing the film’s restoration.
Se7en premiered on September 22, 1995, in North America and became a massive success, grossing $327.3 million worldwide on a $34 million budget—despite early test screenings suggesting its disturbing story might alienate audiences. While it received critical acclaim, it garnered just one Oscar nomination, for Best Film Editing, which it didn’t win. However, time has vindicated Fincher’s brilliance. The film remains one of the most impactful and thought-provoking thrillers of all time.
