Netflix has released the official trailer for Death of the Pastor’s Wife, a new three-part documentary series examining the life, marriage and death of Mica Miller.
Mica’s body was found at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina on April 27, 2024. Authorities subsequently ruled her death a suicide.
But her story quickly attracted national attention.
In the weeks before her death, Mica had contacted law enforcement and described being afraid for her safety. She had also separated from her husband, John-Paul Miller, the pastor of the Myrtle Beach church attended by her family.
Death of the Pastor’s Wife attempts to reconstruct what was happening in Mica’s life during that period through never-before-seen footage, personal recordings and firsthand accounts from the people closest to her.
Several of Mica’s friends and family members speak publicly in the series for the first time.
Rather than focusing solely on the circumstances of her final day, the documentary looks further back at her life and marriage, exploring allegations of coercive control, manipulation and stalking that became central to the public discussion surrounding the case.
The trailer repeatedly returns to Mica’s own voice.
Recordings and footage allow her to describe some of the experiences that concerned those around her, giving the series a perspective that its filmmakers say they considered essential.
Directors Julia Willoughby Nason and Mike Gasparro explain that what remained with them while investigating the story was how strongly Mica appeared to be fighting to be heard.
The filmmaking team therefore approached the documentary not simply as an investigation into a widely discussed true-crime case, but as an attempt to understand the woman behind the headlines.
The case has also continued to develop since Mica’s death.
In December 2025, a federal grand jury indicted John-Paul Miller on charges of cyberstalking his estranged wife and making false statements to federal investigators.
Federal prosecutors allege that unwanted and harassing behaviour began in 2022 and continued until Mica’s death, including repeated communications, interference with her finances and daily activities, tracking devices being placed on her vehicle and the non-consensual publication of an intimate photograph.
Those allegations are separate from the official determination concerning Mica’s death.
Miller has been charged, not convicted, and under US law is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
That distinction is particularly important given the enormous amount of speculation that has surrounded the case online.
Death of the Pastor’s Wife appears determined to separate documented events and firsthand testimony from the theories that spread across social media following Mica’s death.
The series is co-directed by Nason and Gasparro, whose previous true-crime work includes Murdaugh Murders and American Murder: Gabby Petito.
Crazy Legs Productions, The Cinemart and Silvio Productions are behind the documentary.
Across three episodes, the filmmakers examine Mica’s relationships, the events preceding her death and the continuing effort by people close to her to understand what she experienced.
The documentary also places particular emphasis on emotional abuse and coercive control — patterns that can be difficult for people outside a relationship to recognise and equally difficult for those experiencing them to explain.
At the centre of the series, however, is Mica herself.
Through footage recorded before her death and the memories of those who knew her, Death of the Pastor’s Wife attempts to move beyond the sensationalism that often surrounds true-crime stories and preserve a fuller portrait of the person whose death became the subject of national attention.
Death of the Pastor’s Wife premieres globally on Netflix on August 26, 2026.
