Emilia Clarke Tests Her Memory on Game of Thrones
Emilia Clarke attempts to identify her own dialogue from Game of Thrones, Me Before You, Last Christmas and more — with some lines proving considerably easier to remember than others.
Eight seasons as Daenerys Targaryen should make remembering Game of Thrones dialogue easy. In theory.
Variety puts Emilia Clarke through its Know Their Lines? challenge, asking her to identify quotes from across a career that stretches from Westeros to romantic dramas, Star Wars and Christmas movies. Game of Thrones naturally provides plenty of material, alongside Me Before You and Last Christmas — although years of scripts, characters and memorable one-liners have clearly started blending together.
There is an extra reason Clarke should be good at this particular game. She has previously revealed that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were extremely precise about dialogue, sometimes asking actors to redo a take for changing something as small as “it is” to “it’s.” For eight years, remembering the exact words was quite literally part of the job.
The challenge also doubles as a compact tour through Clarke’s remarkably varied career. Since becoming one of television’s most recognisable faces as Daenerys, she has moved between romance in Me Before You, comedy in Last Christmas and huge franchises including Terminator, Star Wars and Marvel.
But recognising a famous scene when you’re watching it is one thing. Remembering exactly what you said while filming it years ago turns out to be considerably harder.
Thankfully, getting the answer wrong is half the fun.
