George Lucas Had a Very Different Vision for Leia’s Fate

For nearly half a century, the Star Wars franchise has been one of the most popular cinematic universes in the world. George Lucas's original vision eventually materialized into a sprawling nine-film saga, though not without challenges. However, Lucas was largely absent from the creation of the final three films, meaning that much of his original ideas for the conclusion of the Skywalker saga never came to fruition.

Recently, it was revealed that George Lucas originally intended for the final trilogy to take a drastically different direction. When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, Lucas was removed from the creative process. Yet his concept for the sequels was compelling and perhaps deserved to be seen on the big screen. His plan was to center the final three films around Leia Organa.

In Lucas’s vision, after the destruction of the second Death Star, the galaxy would have been overrun by gangsters and underworld figures vying for control. Leia would have led the charge against these forces, aiming to rebuild the galaxy and establish a New Republic following the Empire’s fall.

According to Lucas’s plans, the final film would have ended with Leia successfully founding the New Republic, revealing that she was the true "Chosen One" destined to bring peace to the galaxy. However, none of this was realized, as Disney chose to focus the final trilogy on a new generation of heroes. While original characters like Leia, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo still appeared, their roles were more limited.

Tragically, Carrie Fisher, who portrayed Leia, passed away unexpectedly before the ninth film could be completed. As a result, her presence in the final installment was achieved using unused footage from previous films, leaving fans to wonder what could have been had Lucas's original vision come to life.
