A few years ago, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega successfully breathed new life into the Scream film series, with the help of Mikey Madison, who is now in the spotlight for her role in Anora. The seventh installment seemed inevitable, but for a time, the project appeared to be falling apart. Barrera was dropped due to her political statements, Ortega chose to prioritize filming season two of Wednesday, and director Christopher Landon left amidst this and other behind-the-scenes conflicts.
With the newcomers gone, the franchise veterans stepped in to save the film. Neve Campbell and Kevin Williamson—who was promoted from screenwriter of the original Scream to director—helped the project get back on track. Now, after overcoming many obstacles, the filming officially began on January 7 in Atlanta, Georgia.
To celebrate, Williamson shared a photo featuring the official logo of Scream 7 along with an emotional caption:
"I probably shouldn't be posting about Scream, and I hope Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures will forgive me for this, but when you experience one of the best days of your career, it’s hard to keep it to yourself. What an amazing day it was, working with a wonderful and talented cast and crew! They brought their professionalism and supported me every step of the way. I’m deeply grateful for this opportunity and for Wes Craven, who was on my mind every moment. He had such a profound and foundational impact on my life. What a day! I can’t wait for tomorrow!"
Wes Craven, the original director and one of the creative forces behind Scream, passed away in 2015, ten years ago. Scream 7 is currently slated for a February 2026 theatrical release.
