Josh Hartnett Faces Something Terrifying Beneath the Water in Netflix’s BELOW Trailer

There’s something in the water — and whatever it is, Josh Hartnett would really like everyone to stay away from it.

Netflix has released the official trailer for BELOW, a new six-part thriller that turns the rugged coastline of Newfoundland into the setting for a deeply unsettling creature mystery.

Hartnett stars as Calvin Penney, a fisherman living in a small, close-knit Canadian community where life has always revolved around the ocean.

Then something beneath the surface starts fighting back.

The trailer opens with one of the series’ strangest images: a house being transported across the water is suddenly dragged beneath the waves. From there, things only become more disturbing as boats are attacked, strange events spread through the community and something enormous appears to be moving below the surface.

Calvin quickly finds himself fighting on two fronts.

He needs to protect his town, but the danger becomes considerably more personal when his son Wade — played by Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton — begins experiencing terrifying symptoms of his own.

Helping Calvin investigate is Fonda Howander, a visiting marine researcher played by Mackenzie Davis, as the pair begin uncovering secrets connected to both the creature and the island itself.

But BELOW doesn’t look like a straightforward monster series.

Creator and showrunner Jesse McKeown has built the story around Newfoundland itself, mixing local mythology and creature-horror suspense with family drama, humour and the pressures facing an isolated fishing community whose traditional way of life is disappearing.

The landscape is also very real.

The production filmed in Newfoundland, with the actors working extensively on location rather than recreating the coastline entirely on soundstages. Hartnett and Heaton even spent time with local residents and fishermen while preparing their characters.

The supporting cast includes Ruby Stokes, Rohan Campbell, Willow Kean, Kaleb Horn, Natasha Henstridge and Mary Walsh.

Episodes are directed by Jamie Childs, Helen Shaver and Stephen Dunn, while Karen Walton, Perry Chafe and Natty Zavitz join McKeown on the writing team.

And perhaps wisely, the full trailer still refuses to give us a clean look at exactly what is hiding beneath the water.

Because sometimes the thing you can’t quite see is considerably more frightening.

All six episodes of BELOW arrive on Netflix on October 8, 2026.
