Tom Cruise has spent decades saving the world.
This time, he may be the reason it needs saving in the first place.
Warner Bros. has released the final trailer for Digger, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s darkly comic disaster movie starring Cruise as billionaire oil tycoon Digger Rockwell.
And the final preview gives us the clearest look yet at just how spectacularly badly things have gone.
Digger is one of the most powerful men on the planet, an enormously wealthy businessman whose pursuit of profit helps trigger a catastrophic environmental disaster. His drilling operation unleashes consequences capable of devastating entire regions, with the new footage showing enormous waves, panic, angry crowds and governments struggling to contain the escalating crisis.
Digger’s solution?
Convince everyone that he is also the only man capable of fixing it.
Cruise looks almost unrecognisable beneath prosthetics, white hair and an exaggerated Southern persona, giving him one of the strangest characters of his career. Rather than another hyper-competent Ethan Hunt figure, Digger Rockwell appears arrogant, ridiculous, frighteningly powerful and increasingly desperate as his world begins collapsing around him.
Riz Ahmed plays a scientist attempting to hold Digger accountable, while the remarkable supporting cast also includes Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Jesse Plemons, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde and Emma D’Arcy.
The film marks Iñárritu’s first English-language feature since The Revenant and reunites him with Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki.
Visually, Digger is also doing something increasingly unusual for a major studio release: the entire film was shot in VistaVision, the large-format horizontal 35mm process that has recently enjoyed something of a Hollywood revival.
But despite the enormous scale, this clearly isn’t being played as a conventional disaster movie.
The final trailer leans heavily into satire, absurdity and the increasingly uncomfortable spectacle of an incredibly powerful man attempting to convince the world that the catastrophe he helped create actually proves how badly everyone needs him.
A man. A plan. A meltdown.
Digger begins its international theatrical rollout on September 30 and opens in North American theaters and IMAX on October 2, 2026.
