Moana’s “Sisterhood” Spot Celebrates the Women Carrying Disney’s Ocean Story Forward

Disney has released a new Moana spot titled “Sisterhood,” continuing the final wave of promotion before the live-action reimagining reaches theaters on July 10.

The short video focuses on the connection around Moana herself: not only the character’s courage and independence, but the women bringing her story to a new generation. Catherine Lagaʻaia leads the live-action film as Moana, stepping into a role first voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho in the 2016 animated classic. Disney’s official movie page lists “Sisterhood” among the current promotional videos for the July 10 theatrical release.

That sense of continuity is especially important for Moana. The story has always been about listening to the past while choosing your own path, and the live-action version now carries that idea behind the scenes as well. Cravalho is not returning as the on-screen Moana, but she remains part of the project as an executive producer, helping pass the canoe to Lagaʻaia rather than simply watching the role move on without her.

The “Sisterhood” title fits the film’s emotional core. Moana is not a princess waiting to be chosen. She is a wayfinder shaped by family, ancestors, island, ocean and responsibility. A promo built around sisterhood underlines that this version is not only selling spectacle, music and Maui’s larger-than-life presence. It is also selling community, inheritance and representation.

Catherine Lagaʻaia’s casting has become one of the film’s strongest talking points. The Australian actress, who has Samoan heritage, leads the live-action remake opposite Dwayne Johnson, who returns as Maui. For a story rooted in Pacific Islander identity, that visibility matters — especially for younger viewers seeing Moana brought to life in a new form.

For fans of Disney movies, “Sisterhood” is a warm, character-focused reminder of why Moana has lasted beyond its original release. The songs and ocean adventure matter, of course, but the real power of the story is in its emotional handoff: from one generation to another, from one performer to another, and from one girl following the horizon to every viewer who sees herself in that journey.

Moana opens only in theaters on July 10, 2026.
