Netflix has released the official trailer for My Brilliant Career, a new six-part Australian period drama following a fiercely independent young woman determined to build a life on her own terms.
Set in Australia in 1900, the series stars Philippa Northeast as Sybylla, a restless and razor-sharp aspiring writer with little interest in following the path expected of her. While her family believes marriage offers her the safest and most respectable future, Sybylla dreams of turning her experiences into stories and securing her independence through her work.
The trailer introduces a heroine who refuses to make herself quieter, more obedient or more conventional simply to satisfy the people around her. Sybylla wants adventure, creative freedom and the opportunity to decide what her own life should become.
Her convictions become considerably more complicated when she meets Harry, played by Christopher Chung. Falling in love was never part of Sybylla’s plan, and the unexpected relationship forces her to confront a difficult question: can she pursue romance without surrendering the ambitions that define her?
Philippa Northeast leads an extensive cast that also includes Anna Chancellor, Genevieve O’Reilly, Kate Mulvany, Jake Dunn, Alexander England, Sherry-Lee Watson and Miah Madden.
The series is based on Miles Franklin’s celebrated 1901 novel of the same name, which became an important work of Australian literature through its portrayal of a young woman resisting the social restrictions placed upon her. This new adaptation was developed and written by Liz Doran, with Alyssa McClelland and Anne Renton directing the six episodes.
With its sweeping South Australian landscapes, elaborate period costumes and sharply written central character, My Brilliant Career appears set to combine historical romance with a distinctly modern exploration of creative ambition, financial independence and the pressure placed on women to choose between love and personal fulfilment.
My Brilliant Career premieres globally on Netflix on August 13, 2026.
