Resident Evil Trailer Throws Austin Abrams into a Night of Survival Horror

Sony Pictures has released the official trailer for Resident Evil, offering a blood-soaked new look at director Zach Cregger’s reinvention of the celebrated survival-horror franchise.

The film follows Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams, whose seemingly routine assignment rapidly descends into chaos. Trapped in the middle of a horrifying outbreak, Bryan must survive one increasingly violent night as the world around him becomes overrun by infected creatures.

The trailer presents Bryan as an ordinary man thrown into a situation for which he is completely unprepared. Car crashes, abandoned buildings, blood-covered corridors and relentless attacks transform his journey into a desperate race for survival.

Although the film tells an entirely original story, the footage includes several details likely to feel familiar to fans of Capcom’s games. Dark institutional corridors, limited weapons, ominous medical facilities and glimpses of recognisable survival equipment recreate the oppressive atmosphere that helped define the original series.

Austin Abrams leads the cast alongside Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser. Abrams previously worked with Cregger on Weapons, while the supporting cast brings together performers known for both dramatic and comedic roles.

The film is directed by Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian and Weapons. Cregger co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, whose previous credits include John Wick: Chapter 4 and Army of the Dead.

Rather than directly remaking an existing game or continuing one of the earlier film adaptations, this new Resident Evil introduces a separate protagonist and a fresh story within the franchise’s familiar world. The approach allows the film to retain recognisable elements while creating uncertainty about who will survive and where the nightmare will lead.

The full trailer promises a combination of practical horror, violent creature encounters and escalating tension, with Bryan forced to keep moving as each apparent escape leads him into another deadly situation.

Produced by Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film in association with TriStar Pictures, Resident Evil was filmed for IMAX and arrives in US cinemas on September 18, 2026, following the beginning of its international theatrical rollout on September 16.
